The Surin Islands National Park near the Myanmar border is known for calm, shallow reefs that are ideal for snorkelling and for the Moken sea-gypsy village. Boats leave from Khuraburi pier, north of Khao Lak.

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, the starting point for day trips to Phi Phi, James Bond Island and the Similan Islands, with lively Patong and quieter beaches like Kata and Karon.

Good to know: it usually takes full day (about 12 hours including the drive). The operator confirms the exact pickup or start time when you book.

Open in the dry season only (about mid-October to mid-May). It is a long day from Phuket, so many guests stay in Khao Lak. Bring swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and a waterproof bag for your phone. Seas can be rough from May to October, when the boat operator may change the route for safety.

Best time to go: november to April is the dry season with calm seas. May to October is the monsoon: cheaper hotels, but some island trips are changed or cancelled because of waves.
