The Phi Phi Islands, between Phuket and Krabi, are Thailand’s most famous island group. Phi Phi Leh is uninhabited and ringed by cliffs that shelter Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Loh Samah Bay, while Phi Phi Don has the village of Tonsai. A day trip usually covers the lagoons, a snorkelling stop, Monkey Beach and lunch on Phi Phi Don.

Maya Bay has strict rules: no swimming in the bay and visits in time slots. Speedboat rides can be bumpy, so sit at the back if you get seasick. Bring swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and a waterproof bag for your phone. Seas can be rough from May to October, when the boat operator may change the route for safety.

Best time to go: november to April is the dry season with calm seas. May to October is the monsoon: cheaper hotels, but some island trips are changed or cancelled because of waves.
